This week, in 4th and 5th grade, we'll talk about bullying. We will begin the unit by learning to distinguish between Bullying, Put Downs and Teasing. It's important that all students are able to identify bullying, and know what to do if they see it happening. All students will take a Bullying Survey to assist in determining if bullying is a problem at Findley Oaks.
What is Bullying? "A person is bullied when he or she is exposed to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending him or herself." (Don Olweus, Bullying Prevention Program)
This definition includes three important components:
1. Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions.
2. Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength.
3. Bullying generally involves a pattern of behavior.
*There are many strategies for handling Put Downs, Teasing or Conflict, but there is only one strategy for bullying: Get Help from an Adult.*
Students will watch Bullies are a Pain in the Brain, by Trevor Romain, for a closer look at the impact of bullying.
